Teeth Whitening

Teeth whitening or teeth bleaching is an easy way to get a dazzling, white smile.

Over the years, teeth can become discoloured due to ageing, illness, certain foods, smoking, poor oral hygiene, trauma or any combination of these factors.

At Island Dental, we offer several methods of whitening your teeth, from home bleaching to in-office power bleaching.

Before and After Teeth Whitening

At Island Dental, we offer several methods of whitening your teeth, from home bleaching to in-office power bleaching.

At home teeth whitening

Island Dental’s at-home teeth whitening technique involves wearing a custom fitted appliance created in our office, which contains a dental tooth whitening solution. The tooth bleaching gel is placed into the trays and inserted over your teeth for thirty minutes once a day. Take home tooth bleaching takes 2 to 3 weeks to get a whiter, brighter smile.

At home tooth bleaching is an easy and affordable teeth whitening option to whiten discoloured teeth. How white and bright depends on how many days you choose to wear the trays.

Zoom Teeth Whitening is Simple and Safe

The Zoom 3 in-office teeth whitening system consists of a gentle Hydrogen Peroxide based whitening gel and a special metal halide light source. This light source is unique, delivering an optimal band width of 350-530nm for the acceleration of photochemical decomposition of Hydrogen Peroxide, the main activator in teeth whitening.

The active ingredient in the Zoom treatment is Hydrogen Peroxide, which has been used safely in Dentistry for hundreds of years. Hydrogen Peroxide is recognised as a common and effective ingredient by the dental community. It has also been tested and found safe by university researchers.

The Zoom treatment has no adverse effect on existing restorations (fillings), and does not soften the enamel tooth structure. Zoom 3 in-surgery teeth whitening can only be performed by qualified dental staff, which further ensures your safety.

Non-Vital Bleaching

Teeth discoloured by root canal treatment can be whitened simply using slow release hydrogen peroxide gel. The procedure may take 2 to 3 visits for optimum results. Sometimes we may recommend one or more different methods of bleaching depending on your particular case and expectations.

Frequently Asked Questions

When it comes to cosmetic dental treatments, our patients often have numerous questions.

Are all people’s teeth suitable for dental tooth whitening?

Your suitability for dental tooth whitening will be assessed at your initial cosmetic consultation. Sometimes it might be the case that your situation is better suited to another cosmetic treatment and these options will be discussed with you at this time.

For best tooth whitening results we recommend all patients are checked for decay and receive a thorough dental clean before undergoing a tooth whitening treatment. This will remove surface stains and tartar build up prior to tooth whitening ensuring there are no open cavities or other contraindications to tooth whitening.

Will teeth whitening hurt?

The teeth whitening process is normally painless. A very small percentage of people may experience some sensitivity during the procedure. In these cases, we use techniques to resolve the sensitivity. Sometimes it is simply a matter of applying a gel which almost always resolves the sensation.

How white will my teeth become with Zoom in-office teeth whitening?

Clinical studies have shown that the Zoom 3 in-surgery whitening treatment generally achieves a 7-10 shade improvement. Individual results may vary and will depend upon your initial tooth colouring and your oral hygiene circumstances. With Zoom 3 your teeth will be whitened to their optimum natural shade.

How long does professional teeth whitening last?

Your teeth are as individual and unique as you are, and therefore your results may vary. However, in general Zoom 3 whitening results can last up to two years assuming you maintain good dental hygiene. Certain habits, such as the use of tobacco products, drinking a lot of tea, coffee or dark drinks can work against the result. We will explain this to you at the initial consultation.

If you choose in-office Zoom whitening we will also provide you with home bleach trays so that you can touch up the shade at home whenever you like.

Does tooth whitening work on veneers, crowns or tooth coloured bonded materials?

No! Dental tooth whitening treatments are designed to work on vital (living) teeth. If you are considering getting veneers mention this to your dentist at the initial consultation as your teeth should be whitened prior to getting veneers to ensure the colours match.

Regular professional cleaning and use of the touch up whitening gel will help maintain the results indefinitely.

Are over the counter teeth whitening kits any good?

We advise our patients to be wary of TV and pharmacy over the counter teeth whitening kits. Their strength is not the same as dental tooth whitening which can often lead to false claims and expectations about products that don’t work and can sometimes be dangerous for your teeth if not used correctly.

What is the time difference between in-office vs take home teeth whitening?

Take home tooth bleaching takes 2 to 3 weeks to get a whiter, brighter smile. You will have an initial appointment in which your dental trays are created and then you will apply the take home whitening solution everyday for 2-3 weeks.

With Zoom 3 in-office tooth whitening a comfortable, Hydrogen Peroxide based whitening gel is applied to your teeth. The gel is activated by the unique Zoom 3 light source. Only two or three, eight-minute applications are required and the entire procedure is complete in less than an hour.

Is there a catch to “White teeth for life”?

To receive your complimentary teeth whitening touch up kit for life all we ask is that you keep visiting us for your preventive dental hygiene appointments every six months.
