What are dental implants?
Whether you’re missing one tooth or quite a few, dental implants are replacement teeth that are surgically anchored to your jawbone and look, feel and function like natural teeth. Almost anybody can have dental implants – just ask any of our dentists at our Adelaide practice when you’re next in.
How are dental implants put in?
- Implants are small titanium posts that are surgically placed in the jawbone where teeth are missing. Then, over time, the jawbone actually attaches itself to the implant, providing stability. This process, called osseointegration, takes between three to six months. (There are techniques available even for patients who have lost substantial amounts of bone.)
- While the jawbone is joining on to the implant, you’ll be fitted with temporary dentures or natural-looking provisional teeth, so you can function as normally as possible.
- Smaller posts called abutments are screwed into the implant, then a crown or denture is securely attached to the abutment.

What are the benefits of dental implants?
Dental implants replace a tooth, multiple teeth or give strong support to your dentures. Implants can be used in various ways to offer a fixed, long lasting and cosmetic outcome.
Surrounding teeth are unaffected – Since the implant is inserted into the jawbone, the adjacent teeth are not affected. This is very important if these teeth have any large fillings, as other ways of replacing missing teeth would mean that sound tooth structure would be taken away.
Preservation of bone levels – Implants behave exactly like the roots of our own teeth, serving to stimulate the bone and preserving it. Keeping the bone helps maintain our facial shape and prevents premature ageing.
Improved biting pressure – Patients who have had dentures for a long time usually can only apply one-tenth the biting pressure of natural teeth. Dental implants restore the amount of biting pressure that can be withstood to nearly the same level of healthy natural teeth.
Comfort and fit – The usual problems associated with dentures that slip and slide (due to a lack of bone) like sores, poor function and clicking sounds are eliminated by dental implants because the replacement teeth are anchored securely to the implants in the jawbone.
Longevity and reliability – The success rate for dental implants is the highest of any form of dentistry. The human body recognises titanium in the same way as it does a tooth root, so the body accepts the implants. Once this integration occurs and, with proper oral hygiene and care, there are few complications.
Increased self-confidence – At our Adelaide practice, we’ve noticed our patients who’ve had their teeth restored feel a lot better about themselves once they can smile, laugh, talk and eat again with confidence.
Before and After Dental Implants
If you have a missing tooth or teeth, implants may be the ideal result for you. Implants are the closest outcome to having your own tooth back!
Do dental implants hurt?
This is the most commonly asked question by people contemplating this procedure. Most patients tells us that the procedure is much easier than removing a tooth and is a lot better than expected.
There may be some discomfort afterwards, depending on the number of implants placed, however mild pain relievers can manage this. If you’re particularly nervous or need a lot of implants placed at one time, various sedation techniques can be used.
Are dental implants safe?
There’s now been over 30 years of research showing that dental implant treatment is both safe and reliable, even in medically compromised or elderly patients.
At our Adelaide practice, we are proud to offer advanced dental restorations and take a meticulous approach to implant treatment. It’s an important part of our commitment to help you keep a healthy, great-looking smile for as long as you can. Call us on (08) 8449 9777 to schedule your initial cosmetic consultation.
