Do you want to get ahead?
Like it or not, there’s good evidence to suggest that your appearance impacts your career. Don’t believe us?
A 2004 study by the University of Florida found that for every inch of height, a tall worker can expect an extra $789 per year. So, six-inches in height mean a $5,000 salary difference.
A 2010 study from the Queensland University of Technology showed that blondes earn more than 7% more than women with any other hair colour.
Now, we’re not suggesting you take radical action with your hair or height, but here are some more manageable ways you can impact your career.
Dress for Success
A study in the Journal of Experimental Psychology in 2014 showed that high-status clothes could increase dominance and job performance in competitive tasks.
So that old saying about dressing for success is true. As another saying goes, “Dress for the job you want, not the job you have”.
Doing this demonstrates you take your role seriously, and are professional and conscientious.
Further your Fitness
Cleveland State University found that people who exercise three or more times a week earned an extra $80 a week, on average. Even those who exercised less saw a slight increase in salary.
So staying fit improves your health, and it’s likely to improve your career and salary too.
Apply a Little Makeup
The American Economic Review reported that women who wear makeup could earn more than 30% more than those who choose not to wear makeup at all. A study in the London Times reported, “64% of directors said that women who wore make-up looked more professional.”
Boost your Confidence
A Yale University study found employers pay an average of about 5% more to attractive people, while unattractive people can miss out on almost 9%. Many employers don’t even realise they’re discriminating in this way.
The key thing is to be comfortable in your own skin because it has the flow on effect of boosting your confidence. Know that you can present yourself at your best and perform well.
If something about your appearance bothers you, investigate your options. We’re not suggesting radical action, but if it’s a concern it’s worth investigating. Maybe there’s a solution out there that will help.
