Dental sedation options
It is perfectly normal to be fearful of the dentist and any oral surgery procedures. At Island Dental we can help nervous patients with a variety of options to improve their comfort during their appointment.
We will use different types and levels of sedation, mild, moderate and deep, depending upon your treatment, medical history and after discussing and understanding your circumstances fully.
Island Dental provides the following options:
- Nitrous Oxide or “Laughing Gas” is a mild dental sedative with minimal side effects. Patients remain conscious and experience a numb tingling sensation. It helps patients feel relaxed and can reduce any pain felt. In many cases patients will be fine to drive after their treatment once the effects have worn off.
- Twilight sedation or Intravenous (IV) sedation is a moderate level of dental sedation we use for shorter dental procedures. It is delivered by an injection directly into your bloodstream and gives patients the sense that they have slept through their dental treatment. We ask that patients have a designated driver when having twilight sedation.
- Oral conscious sedation is taken as a tablet so is an ideal sedation option if you hate needles. An oral sedative, such as valium, will dull sensations whilst leaving you conscious. Patients report not remembering what happened during their treatment. A designated driver will be needed to take you home following your treatment.
